How Energy Bill Lab explains formulas, assumptions, source dates, and limitations for energy-cost estimates.

Estimate-first, not prediction-first

Energy Bill Lab calculations are informational estimates. They are intended to help users understand cost drivers, not to predict a utility bill exactly.

Actual bills can change because of taxes, riders, fuel adjustments, fixed fees, tiered rates, demand charges, weather, occupancy, appliance condition, billing-cycle length, and household behavior.

3-Tier Data Provenance Framework

To maintain mathematical defensibility and total transparency, all Energy Bill Lab benchmarks, tools, and research reports strictly categorize information into three distinct analytical tiers:

1. Official Source Data: Primary empirical datasets collected by official government agencies and accredited standards organizations, including U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA Form EIA-861M) retail electricity and natural gas rates, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) test procedures, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) modeling data, and EPA ENERGY STAR specifications.

2. EnergyBillLab Model Assumptions: Explicitly declared engineering and behavioral baseline parameters, such as equipment operating hours, seasonal heating/cooling degree days, appliance duty cycles, coefficient of performance (COP) baselines, water temperature differentials, and household floor area baselines.

3. Derived Calculated Results: Mathematical outputs derived deterministically by applying decimal-safe formulas to the combination of official source inputs and declared model assumptions (e.g., annual kWh consumption totals, monthly operating cost comparisons, multi-state rate impact matrices, and 10-year Total Cost of Ownership lifecycle models).

Formula transparency & decimal-safe arithmetic

Each calculator displays its formula, input units, assumptions, warnings, rounding behavior, and the source of any default rate or appliance value used.

Calculations use explicit unit conversions, decimal-safe arithmetic, and deterministic rounding formulas documented transparently on each tool page.
